When Budapest-based alt-pop artist Yamazaki showcased his talents on the stage of the Hungarian national broadcaster RTL for the first time, it was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Featuring on the primetime talent show Csillag Születik with his single “Unfolded”, it was far more than a career milestone. It was the moment that the once-virtual performer fully stepped into the physical light celebrating his arrival in full wolf persona.

Before Yamazaki was Yamazaki—the Japanese-influenced alt-pop harkas (wolf) character now turning heads across—he was a quiet IT student who spent more time exploring virtual landscapes than real ones. His gateway into music wasn’t a garage or a local club, but VRChat, the global digital community where he first performed under the name Beniwolf.

What began as small experimental videos evolved into full-scale concerts, at times drawing crowds of up to 15,000 virtual attendees at events such as the world's largest VR festival (Virtual Market) or airplay on Tokyo's InterFM. On those neon stages and digital streets, he found the courage to sing with his own voice, create original music, and forge a persona that reflected everything he didn’t yet feel ready to show in real life.

That imagery—a wolf figure inspired by Japanese culture, 80s city-pop aesthetics, and the introspective futurism of Ghost in the Shell—became both shield and compass. “The wolf has been a part of me since I was 15,” he says. “It represents resilience. It lets me be myself without apology.” For nearly two decades, the character followed him through online worlds, musical reinventions, and creative awakenings. Now, as he moves from VR stages to televised ones, the wolf is stepping forward with him.

“Unfolded” distils that emotional evolution into a glowing blend of Japanese-influenced alt-pop, city-pop warmth, synthwave textures, with R&B/hip-hop flavours. Co-created with vocalist Ashley Alisha and supported by a team of international musicians, the track’s sonic palette mirrors Yamazaki’s journey: part ambient nostalgia, part urban pulse, part futuristic dreamscape. Hip-hop basslines ground the song in something raw and real, while airy synths and layered harmonies evoke the sensation of opening up after years spent hidden.

Lyrically, “Unfolded” is intimate and unguarded. It tells the story of a boy who always felt like an outsider—the kid “in the last row,” as Yamazaki describes—who tried to shrink himself to fit into places he was never meant to. Writing the song, he says, “felt like promising my younger self that it’s okay to step into the light.” With its multilingual verses and carefully crafted emotional arc, “Unfolded” becomes a personal liberation set to melody, the sound of an identity finally allowed to breathe.

What makes Yamazaki’s rise extraordinary is the bridge he has built between worlds: from classical music training to Japanese language studies, from VR concerts to real-world stages, from furry conventions to alt-pop playlists. In every phase, he has used music as a way to merge technology, culture, and introspection in ways that defy genre borders. His wolf persona, rooted partly in Shinto symbolism, gives his work a spiritual dimension—an ongoing dialogue between the natural and the digital, the ancient and the hypermodern.

With “Unfolded” now circulating on major streaming platforms and standing in the full glare of the national spotlight, Yamazaki is entering his next chapter. And while the performance marked his television debut, it also felt like something even bigger was in store: a symbolic crossing from avatar to artist, from hidden to seen.
